Bio Perm Types: What to Choose in 2027
Salons in Kazan offer a handful of variations on the procedure now. The one that makes sense for you comes down to the effect you want, your hair length and the curl type.
Italian bio perm (Mossa)
Formula with bamboo extract. Suits short and mid-length hair, shapes springy small curls. At Chicago we do this technique with Estel Wavex and Adricoco / Niagara formulas - the stylist picks the brand based on your hair structure.
French bio perm (Biowave)
A mild formula with cysteamine and sea minerals. Gives light wave and volume - a good pick if you want soft "beach" waves rather than tight curls.
Korean bio perm
The standout trend of 2027. It's not about curls, it's about that status-y, soft texture - the "rich girl" hair you see in K-dramas. The stylist picks the tension and roller diameter individually, so the waves fall over the shoulders as an easy, lived-in look. At Chicago the Korean technique uses Hair Sekta and Insight formulas - they give a soft, mobile wave and work well on fine hair.
Carving
A light chemical wave that doesn't stick around long - six to eight weeks on average. It creates volume, not tight curls. A good move for anyone who wants to try a perm without a long-term commitment.
Men's bio perm
Its own direction, and one that keeps picking up steam. Men book a bio perm to get lift on the top zone or a soft texture across the length. At Chicago the men's bio perm is most often done with Estel Wavex: top zone from 3 500 ₽, bob to shoulders from 4 500 ₽. On coarser hair the stylist may suggest a stronger formula.
Who a bio perm suits, and who should skip it
Bio perm works for a lot of people - but there are caveats.
Good fit
- Anyone with straight, fine hair that just won't hold volume.
- People who are done with daily curling wand or round-brush styling.
- Women with colored hair (assuming it's in healthy shape).
- Men who want texture and volume.
Contraindications
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding - hormonal shifts change the hair structure, and the result can be unpredictable.
- Allergy to formula ingredients.
- Badly damaged, brittle or porous hair - even a gentle formula can make it worse.
- Skin conditions in the application zone (dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema).
- Recent coloring with henna or basma - the natural pigments mess with the chemical process.
- Fresh wounds or inflammation on the scalp.
Before starting, the Chicago stylist always checks the hair and scalp. If anything is in doubt, it's better to postpone the bio perm or pick carving for a gentler effect.
What the appointment looks like
A bio perm runs between two and five hours, depending on hair length and the specific type. The steps:
- Consultation. The stylist checks hair structure, damage level and scalp type.
- Prep. Hair is washed with a deep-cleansing shampoo to strip styling residue and scalp oil.
- Wrapping. Strands are wound on rollers or curling rods of the right diameter. For the Korean technique, the tension and winding direction are picked individually.
- Formula. Applied to each section; processing time is 15–20 minutes depending on hair type.
- Setting. A neutralizer goes on to lock the curl shape.
- Rinse and finish. Hair is rinsed, a conditioning treatment goes on, and the stylist shows you how to style the curls at home.
Aftercare: the first 48 hours and beyond
Good aftercare is what keeps the curls in shape and shiny for three to six months.
First 48 hours
- Don't wash your hair. The formula is still setting, and washing early breaks the curl formation.
- Don't pull it into a tight ponytail; no hair ties or clips.
- Skip the sauna, steam room, pool.
- Sleep on a silk pillowcase to cut down on friction.
Home care
- Shampoo. Gentle, no harsh sulfates (SLS/SLES), pH 4.5–5.5. Wash no more than two or three times a week.
- Conditioner and mask. Moisturizing, with amino acids and keratin. Apply along the length, away from the roots.
- Leave-in. A curl cream or serum keeps the shape and keeps frizz under control.
- Drying. Air-dry or use a diffuser on low heat. Don't brush dry hair - only wet, with a wide-tooth comb.
- Heat protection. Non-negotiable with a curling wand, flat iron or blow dryer.
After a month or so, the curls may start to frizz. That doesn't mean the perm is "falling apart" - the hair simply becomes more porous and dries out. This is when it matters most to step up moisturizing and add nourishing masks to the routine.
