Bio Perm: Answers to the Questions We Hear Most

Bio perm has been one of the most requested treatments at the salon over the past couple of seasons. It's a gentler way to get long-lasting waves without doing a number on your hair. Here are the questions our clients at Chicago in Kazan ask most often - and our honest answers.

What is a bio perm, and how does it actually work?

A bio perm is a gentle long-lasting styling treatment. We apply a soft formula - lower concentration of active ingredients than a classic "chem" perm - that works on the disulfide bonds inside the hair. Each section gets wrapped on a roller of the chosen diameter, then a neutralizer goes on to close the cuticle and lock the shape in place. The result: waves that hold for three to six months.

How is it different from a classic perm and from carving?

Classic perms use harsh alkaline formulas (pH up to 9–10) that do a real number on the hair's structure. Bio perm works at a soft, near-neutral pH and often carries conditioning ingredients - proteins, oils, keratin. Carving is basically a bio perm variation with larger curls and minimal impact. People sometimes call it "a perm without the perm", since the result reads as natural volume rather than defined curls.

What types of bio perm are there?

What happens during the appointment?

At Chicago, a bio perm takes between 1.5 and 3 hours. Here's how it goes:

  1. Consultation. Your stylist looks at the hair structure, damage level and scalp condition.
  2. Wash. Deep-cleansing shampoo, no conditioner.
  3. Formula. Applied along the length, one or two centimetres from the roots.
  4. Wrapping. Roller diameter depends on the curl size you're after.
  5. Processing. Timed by hair type and formula - usually 15 to 25 minutes.
  6. Rinse with the rollers still in.
  7. Neutralizing. The neutralizer locks the curl.
  8. Rollers out, rinse, care. Your stylist applies a repairing conditioner and shows you how to style the curls at home.

How should I prep before a bio perm?

Two to three weeks out, work in a course of repairing masks with keratin and proteins. Skip washing your hair on the day of the appointment - the scalp's natural oils lower the risk of irritation. Also avoid conditioner and oils for a day or two before. And make sure you tell your stylist about every recent treatment: color, keratin, botox.

What hair is suitable for a bio perm - and what isn't?

Good fit

  • Healthy hair of medium coarseness;
  • Natural or dark-toned colored hair;
  • Fine, sparse hair - with care, on larger rollers.

Better to skip

  • Heavily lightened hair (level 9–10 blonde);
  • Hair with high porosity and breakage;
  • Hair that's had aggressive chemical processing recently;
  • Hair treated with henna or basma - natural pigments can block the formula.

Can I get a bio perm after keratin?

Keratin and bio perm pull in opposite directions. If a keratin layer is still on the hair, the perm may not take, or it can come out uneven. Wait at least two to three months after keratin, or run a deep cleanse (detox shampoo) before the perm. Your stylist makes the final call after looking at the hair.

Can I get a bio perm on colored hair?

On dark-colored hair - yes, with a gentle formula. On lightened hair (especially blonde) the risk is higher: strands can go brittle and the curl can lose shape. If your stylist takes the job, they'll use a formula for damaged hair and run a strand test.

Best case: wait one to two weeks after color without lightening. With lightening, push it to two or three weeks.

What are the contraindications?

Do not get a bio perm if:

  • Hair is damaged, brittle or highly porous;
  • There's a scalp condition (seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, fungal infection);
  • There are open wounds or scratches on the scalp;
  • You're allergic to any of the formula ingredients;
  • You're pregnant or breastfeeding;
  • You had a color with lightening less than two weeks ago.

Worth flagging: hormone medication and a recent course of antibiotics aren't direct contraindications, but they can affect the result. Tell your stylist - they'll decide after looking at your hair.

What if my hair is falling out?

With active hair loss, a perm isn't recommended - the chemical processing and roller tension can make shedding worse. First figure out why your hair is falling out and treat that. Come back to the perm after.

What about seborrhea?

No. With seborrheic dermatitis (dry or oily), a perm is off the table - the chemicals can worsen inflammation and irritation. See a trichologist first.

Can I get a bio perm while pregnant?

Most stylists advise against it. Hormonal shifts during pregnancy and breastfeeding can make the result unpredictable - the curl may not take, or it may drop fast. On top of that, the formula has a strong smell that can trigger nausea. The safety of the ingredients for the fetus hasn't been studied well enough.

How long does a bio perm last?

On average three to six months - it depends on hair type, length, aftercare and the formula. Coarse hair holds longer; soft, fine hair less so. Big curls drop out faster than tight ones.

How often can I repeat it?

No more than once every four to six months. More often than that, and damage builds up. If your hair is already weakened, stretch it to eight to twelve months.

How do I care for my hair after a bio perm?

The first 48–72 hours

Home care

What if my scalp feels dry or itchy after a bio perm?

Use soothing products with panthenol, aloe or chamomile. If the dryness hasn't cleared up within a week, see a trichologist. Most often it's a reaction to formula that got on the scalp, or to an aggressive shampoo afterward.

How do I pick a stylist for a bio perm?

Which curl size should I go for?

What if I don't like the result?

If the curl didn't take, is too weak, or came out too tight - talk to the stylist who did it. In some cases a correction (re-wrapping on a different diameter) is possible within three to five days. If the hair is damaged, you'll need a recovery course. If the damage is serious, see a trichologist.

At Chicago we always work it out with the client. If something went off, we sort it out together. The goal is for you to walk out with curls you love - not with wrecked hair.
