Men's semi-box
Semi-box is a short men's haircut where the temples and the nape are cut with clippers almost to zero or on one or two guards, while a short length is left on top. The top is usually no longer than 3–4 cm, so you barely need to style it — the hair falls evenly on its own or slightly to the side.
Semi-box is not a "box cut with a long top", although visually they are similar. In a box cut the top is cut very short, almost level with the sides, and the difference between zones is barely noticeable. In a semi-box the top is noticeably longer, so the silhouette looks softer. Semi-box also rarely has a sharp fade or a fully shaved outline — in the classic version, the difference in length is smooth, without a sharp boundary.
Because the shape is compact and has no strong texture, semi-box is often chosen by older men or those who want their hair to look equally neat every day without any styling.
Who it suits
Semi-box is a practical cut for those who don't want to think about their hair in the morning. It works well on straight and slightly wavy medium-density hair: on both fine and thick hair the stylist picks the length of the top so the shape doesn't look flat or, on the contrary, too heavy.
By face shape, semi-box is fairly universal. Long faces are flattered because the top isn't fully shaved to zero; on round and square faces the stylist lifts the top length a little so the silhouette doesn't "stick" to the head. If your hair is very curly, semi-box is also possible, but it's better to leave the top a bit longer, otherwise the curl will stick out in all directions.
If you're not ready for ultra-short shapes like a box cut but don't want to spend time on styling, semi-box usually turns out to be the golden mean. It's easy to maintain at home and doesn't need to be refreshed every two weeks, like a fade.
How the haircut is done at the salon
The stylist first confirms the top length and how short to cut the sides and the back. Then the work moves to the clipper on the sides and scissors on top, with a soft connection between them. If you want a more modern look, the stylist can add a light fade on the temples or short texture on top so the shape doesn't look plastered down.
In time, that's usually 30–40 minutes. Semi-box has no complex techniques, so it can be refreshed as it grows out — usually every 3–5 weeks. If your hair grows fast and the clean outline matters, it's worth coming closer to three weeks; with slower growth a month is enough.
Care and styling at home
Minimal care. After washing, pat the hair with a towel and run the hairdryer once in the direction of growth — the shape falls into place itself. Most people don't need any styling: if you want to emphasise texture slightly, a bit of cream or matte paste works, but on a short top this step is often skipped.
The important point — don't apply heavy oils or strong-hold products to the top. On short length they "press" the hair down and the cut starts to look plastered. It's better to choose a light cream or do without product altogether.
