Cascade haircut

Women's cascade haircut at Chicago salon, Kazan
Cascade with a smooth length transition

Cascade is a haircut with several layers that transition smoothly from shorter strands on top to longer ones at the ends. The difference in length between the layers isn't sharp: because of that the transition looks soft, and the hair keeps movement and volume along the whole length. Cascade looks equally good on medium-length and long hair.

Cascade is often confused with a ladder, but there's a difference. A ladder is built on straight lines and usually done around the face, with a clear rhythm of length. A cascade is precisely the layering along the whole length: the upper strands are shorter than the lower ones, and the transition is distributed over the head, not only around the face.

Cascade can be with or without bangs, with a short top area or an elongated one, with a soft texture or a clear graduation. In each case the shape will look different — even on the same hair length.

Who suits cascade

Cascade is one of the most versatile shapes. Thanks to the layers it adds visual volume, so it suits especially well fine hair that looks "flat" in a single cut. On thick hair the stylist works on the ends so the shape doesn't turn into a heavy mass.

The shape looks good on almost any face type if the length of the upper layer and the position of the strands around the face are chosen correctly. For a round face it's better to start the layers below cheekbone level; for a long face, slightly higher to add volume at the sides; for an oval face, any variation works.

Cascade doesn't require perfectly straight hair: on a slight wave it looks even more natural. On curly hair the shape is also possible, but the layers will look different — it's important that the stylist knows how to cut curls and takes the natural shrinkage into account.

How the haircut is done at the salon

First the stylist establishes the desired length and how pronounced the layers should be. Cascade can be very soft, almost invisible, or more graphic — these are two different cutting approaches.

The cut usually takes 40–60 minutes. The stylist sets a control length, then gradually lifts the upper strands and shapes the transitions. The face-framing strands and, if needed, the bangs get separate attention. At the end the hair is dried and styled so that you can see how the layers work in motion.

Cascade grows out fairly softly: the layers gradually slide down, and the shape loses its definition gradually. It's convenient to refresh the cut every 2–3 months — or more often if you want the layers to stay crisp.

Care and styling at home

Cascade doesn't require complex styling, but it likes movement. After washing pat the hair with a towel and blow-dry it, tilting your head down — this lifts the roots and the volume lasts longer. A round brush or a blow-dry brush will help set the shape of the layers.

For an everyday look a light texturising product is enough: a spray, mousse or cream. Apply it to damp hair, not wet — otherwise the product will weigh the strands down. A straightener may be needed if you want to emphasise individual strands or, on the contrary, straighten them slightly.

Once every 1–2 weeks it's useful to apply a nourishing mask along the length — layered hair dries out at the ends more often. And every 6–8 weeks trim the ends so the shape stays neat.
