Kare haircut

Women's kare haircut at Chicago salon, Kazan
Classic kare with a blunt cut

Kare (also known as the blunt bob cut) is a medium-length haircut with a clean, even cut line and hair of one length all around. The line goes horizontally, usually at chin, cheekbone or slightly lower level. The main feature of kare is exactly this cut: it is not graduated and not layered, so the shape looks graphic and solid.

Classic kare is often confused with a bob, but there's a difference between them. A bob is built on volume and a soft shape; kare is about an even line. If in a bob the stylist distributes the strands so that the back looks rounded, in kare the task is the opposite: to keep a single length and a clean silhouette.

Kare has many variations: with straight or side-swept bangs, elongated (to the shoulders), with a "leg" (short at the nape), with an angle at the face, asymmetric, with elongated front strands. Which one suits you depends on your face shape, hair density and how strict a look you want.

Who suits kare

Kare sits well on straight and slightly wavy hair — that's where the clean cut holds the longest. On curly hair the shape is also possible but requires a different technique and constant styling, so it's worth discussing with a stylist separately.

The shape suits most face types if the length is chosen correctly. For a round face, choose an elongated kare to the shoulders or with an angle at the face; for a long face, a short chin-length kare with straight bangs; for an oval face, almost any variation works. Square and rectangular faces are flattered by elongated face-framing strands and soft bangs.

On fine hair, kare looks best in a shorter version and with bangs — so the hair doesn't look "thin" at the ends. On thick hair, on the contrary, you can afford the length and play with the density of the cut.

How the haircut is done at the salon

First the stylist discusses the length: where the cut line should go, whether bangs are needed and how they will connect to the main body of hair. Then they assess the structure and growth pattern — this affects how even the cut will turn out.

The cut usually takes 40–60 minutes. The stylist levels the length against a control strand and works on the line around the face and the bangs. Special attention goes to the ends: in kare they should lie flat, without "steps". Finally the hair is dried and styled into shape.

Kare requires regular trimming: the cut lives for 4–6 weeks, after that the line starts to "spread". If more than a centimetre grows out, the crispness of the shape is lost. That's why with kare it's sensible to plan a trim once a month or every six weeks.

Care and styling at home

Kare doesn't need complex styling but it does like neatness. After washing pat the hair with a towel and blow-dry, directing the strands downwards — this helps the line lie evenly. A round brush will help you tuck the ends inwards, as in a classic kare.

For an everyday look a light leave-in cream or serum is enough: they add smoothness and remove frizz. A straightener may be needed if your hair is slightly wavy and you want a perfectly even line — but on straight hair it's usually not required.

Kare is a shape that looks good when the hair is well cared for. Every 1–2 months trim the ends even if a full shape correction isn't needed: split ends break the clean cut line.
