Long bob
A long bob is the same bob shape, only longer: the hair ends not at chin level but at the shoulders or slightly below. In English it's often called long bob, or simply lob. The silhouette keeps volume at the back of the head, but the cut line sits lower — which makes the shape look softer and more "grown-up" than a classic bob.
A lob is chosen by those who like the idea of a bob but don't want to cut their hair short. It works well as an intermediate option, when you're growing out your hair after a short cut or, on the contrary, thinking about a medium length after long hair.
There are many variations: with or without bangs, with a straight line or with layers around the face, with a blunt cut or with slightly textured ends. Which one to choose depends on your face shape, hair density and how easy the styling should be.
Who suits a long bob
A long bob is one of the most versatile medium-length shapes. It looks good on almost any face shape if the length and the line around the face are chosen correctly. For a long face, jaw-to-clavicle length and soft bangs work well; for a round face, a lob with strands around the face slightly elongated forward; for an oval face, almost any variation.
On fine hair, a lob with volume at the back and a light texture visually adds thickness. On thick hair the stylist works on the ends so the shape doesn't turn into a heavy mass. On curly hair a long bob is also possible but requires a different technique and more frequent trims.
A separate note on length. If a chin-length bob is about graphics and focus on the face, a lob shifts the focus to the shoulders and the general line of the silhouette. That's why it looks especially good on people with a long neck and open collarbones.
How the haircut is done at the salon
First the stylist confirms the length and the line: to the shoulders, slightly lower, or to the collarbones; with or without bangs; a blunt cut or a soft texture. Then they assess the hair structure and growth pattern — this affects how even the shape will be and how it will fall without styling.
The cut usually takes 45–60 minutes. The stylist sets the overall length, builds the volume at the back and works on the ends — for a lob they are usually softer than on a classic bob. Special attention goes to the strands around the face: they define the shape and affect how the silhouette looks from the front.
A lob grows out softer than a short bob, so the cut can be refreshed every 6–8 weeks. Even so, it's worth trimming the ends every 1.5–2 months so they don't split and the line stays even.
Care and styling at home
A long bob is convenient because it looks great even without styling. Just wash your hair, pat it with a towel and let it air-dry — the shape falls into place by itself. If you want to add volume, blow-dry with a round brush, lifting the strands at the roots.
For a sleeker look, use a light leave-in cream or serum — they remove frizz and add shine. For texture, a salt spray or a texturising paste applied to damp hair works well. A straightener is usually not needed, but it can help curl the ends inwards or, conversely, make them look a little more casual.
Apply conditioner along the length, not at the roots. Once every 1–2 weeks it's useful to do a nourishing mask: shoulder-length hair often dries out at the ends. And every 6–8 weeks trim the ends so the cut line stays neat.
